"We were hoping that [...] the trial should not have commenced [...] that it would be discontinued and all charges dropped, and [...] that she would be found 'not guilty'. All of these did not happen, so that's why we are extremely disappointed."

] I left a heavy agenda for them [SPDC] to work on the release of all political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, resumption of dialogue between the Government and opposition without conditions and without further delay, working on them with conditions conducive to free and fair elections whenever they are held, a national economic forum to address in a broad-based manner socio-economic matters, and a more regularized form of engagement [..].

UN News Centre (25 Feb 2009) Interview with UN Special Adviser Ibrahim Gambari
|
| 2009-02-20 |
I informed the Council that, so far, we have not seen any tangible outcome of my visit.
Our position has not changed. We are not advocating elections in 2010 or any time. It is up to the Government and people of Myanmar to decide, but we continue to advocate conditions that are conducive to free and fair elections, when they do take place.
As I told the Government, now is the time to demonstrate Myanmar's commitment to addressing concretely the issues of concern to the international community, particularly the release of political prisoners and the resumption of dialogue between the Government and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

"[T]he United Nations [...] supports the request that this dialogue should be resumed and should not be broken up even when there are disagreements, and that the government should consider raising the level of the interlocutor on their side so that there would be prompt responses to her questions".
"[When I visit Myanmar] I tell the government beforehand who I would like to see and they make the arrangements. Often I do not get what I request, unfortunately".
"But it is also very clear that we are frustrated that no tangible results are coming out of the process [of consultation with the junta]".
"It was made very clear that we [the UN] want an all-inclusive national reconciliation process; a dialogue that [would address] the real concerns of the people [...]".
"We want all those who have influence to exercise this influence in tangible ways on the authorities in Myanmar so that this dialogue will resume without any further delay".
"My own view [on the 2010 elections], which is not that of the [UN] secretary-general is that [although] we are mandated under the Good Offices role to extend technical assistance to countries that request them, [we should not wait] until 2010 to create the conditions that would enhance the credibility of the elections. [...] It is possible therefore that action can be taken--¬an all-inclusive process, a transparent process, a process that is free and fair and can be implemented between now and 2010".

"All those who have influence on the authorities of Myanmar, including neighboring countries, including ASEAN, we are calling on them to use it to encourage the authorities to release political prisoners and Aung San Suu Kyi."
As long as political prisoners including Suu Kyi are not released, it will continue to be a problem for the regime and it will draw back progress towards democratization."
"We believe that between now and 2010, there should be a serious discussion between the government and Aung San Suu Kyi and her party to ensure the credibility of the process".
