This briefer, written in conjunction with FIDH,
gives an update on the electoral process in Burma in light of
the release of the SPDC’s repressive election laws.
The repressive laws, along with the restraints
placed on the media, ensure that the upcoming elections will not
be free or fair. Furthermore, recent moves by the SPDC show that
it has every intention of maintaining its grip on Burma’s
political and economic future.
The briefer calls on the international community
to reject the regime’s elections, support Burma’s
human rights defenders and the pro-democracy movement, and insist
on inclusive tripartite dialogue between the regime, pro-democracy
forces, and ethnic nationality groups.
